CBS News: A pod of at least 10 orcas was seen trapped by sea ice off the coast of northern Japan, but appeared to have escaped by Wednesday. Drone video showed the killer whales struggling with their heads above the frozen waters.
The coast guard was unable to rescue them on Tuesday due to thick ice, but by Wednesday morning, they were no longer visible. Officials believe the orcas escaped as the gap in the drift ice opened. Rausu, the nearest town, is located on Hokkaido's Shiretoko Peninsula, a World Natural Heritage Site. In 2005, about 10 orcas died in the same area after getting stuck in drift ice.
